(San Diego, CA) - With an 8-1 victory over Portland Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium, San Diego improved its season record to 24-19. USD received another strong pitching performance from senior Kyle Collins, who owns a perfect 5-0 record through seven conference starts this season. Freshman left-hander Nate Boman worked a pair of innings to earn his fourth save. Jose Ortega (pictured) went 3-for-4, extending his current hitting streak to 14 games. The weekend series concludes Sunday at 1pm.
San Diego (24-19, 11-9 WCC) has won nine of its last ten league games and is currently three games behind division leading Loyola Marymount in the WCC's West Division standings. Ortega, Freddy Sandoval and Tom Caple each posted three hits for a Torero lineup that totaled 15 on the afternoon. Caple hit a two-run homer and Sandoval tripled, contributing to a four-run USD eighth inning.
Caple was 3-for-5 with three RBI's, a homerun (his third), a double, two runs and a stolen base. Sandoval was 3-for-4 Saturday, driving home senior Josh Hansen with an RBI single as part of a two-run USD fourth inning- chasing Portland starter Sean Sargent (2-5). Portland Reliever Jared Adams worked four plus innings in relief of Sargent, giving up 10 hits and six earned runs.
San Diego never trailed, leading 3-0 after five innings and 4-1 after seven. Joey Prast hit his 11th double of the season (he needs just two more doubles to become San Diego's all-time career leader). Nate Boman pitched two scoreless innings of relief to register his fourth collegiate save.
Portland (7-31, 3-14 WCC) was paced by senior Travis Vetters, who hit three singles and drove in the Pilots lone run. Infielder's Jesse Rodgers and Gustaf Little each had a pair of hits. Little's double in the sixth inning accounted for the only extra-base hit Portland managed on the afternoon.
