(San Francisco, CA) - Jordan Abruzzo hit a two-run homer during an improbable ninth-inning comeback, allowing visiting San Diego (28-19, 14-9) a 6-5 victory over San Francisco (21-26, 8-12) Saturday. The series clinching win puts the Toreros just two games behind division leading Loyola Marymount in the WCC West standings. Freshman Nate Boman struck out the final two USF batters to earn his sixth save. San Diego will try and sweep the Dons when the series concludes Sunday afternoon.
Abruzzo and freshman classmate Keoni Ruth both hit homeruns Saturday. Randy Curtis and Tom Caple both added RBI's, Caple's coming on a bases loaded walk in the ninth that gave USD the decisive 6-5 advantage. San Diego has won eight straight games to pull within two games of an LMU team that dropped a 4-3 decision to Pepperdine.
Pat Lucy (3-0) was the winning pitcher of record for the Toreros. Lucy fanned two in three plus innings in relief of USD starter Kyle Collins. Collins was lifted in the fifth, allowing three runs on nine hits. Boman came into the game with an 0.98 ERA in ten league appearances and a team-high 57 K's in just 42 plus innings of work.
