Gonzaga Rips Toreros in Series Opener

(San Diego, CA) - San Diego dropped its series-opener to visiting Gonzaga 14-0 Friday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium. The Zags (17-9; 4-2 WCC) ripped Torero pitching for 20 hits, extending their current winning streak to five games. Every batter Gonzaga sent to the plate Friday recorded a base hit.

San Diego (18-16-1; 4-6 WCC) continues to struggle at home this season, falling to 3-10-1 at Cunningham Stadium. The weekend set continues on Saturday and Sunday, both games this weekend are scheduled to start at 1pm.

Gonzaga starter Josh Monroe (5-1) was impressive for the Bulldogs, throwing a complete-game seven-hit shutout. Monroe, a junior right-hander from Woodinville, Washington, has won five of his eight starts this season.

USD starter Justin Blaine (5-4) allowed 10 hits and five earned runs in six innings of work. Torero reliever Russell Holzhauer allowed Gonzaga to score seven runs in the top half of the eighth inning.

The projected WCC Player of the Year Kiel Thibault went 3-for-6 for GU and scored a pair of runs. Third baseman Darin Holcomb also had three hits and first baseman Bobby Carlson tallied four RBIs.
