Box Score
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - UC Irvine (6-5) used a six-run eighth inning to rally for a 10-4 non-conference win against the eighth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (7-3) Tuesday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
The Toreros were able to keep pace with UCI through the first four innings, as they scored one run in the first inning on a solo homerun by junior shortstop Steve Singleton, as he ran his hitting streak to 10 games.
After UCI scored two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead, USD responded with one run of their own. Shane Buschini doubled to left field and moved to third on a Jordan Abruzzo ground out to the shortstop. Buschini then came across on a wild pitch by UCI starting pitcher Gary Nakashima.
After UCI scored another run in the fifth inning to again increase their lead to two runs, USD was able to knot the score at four with a two-run sixth inning. With two outs, Daniel Magness hit single to second and moved to second on a Ryan Lilly single to the shortstop. Logan Gelbrich then launched a two-run double to left field scoring both Magness and Lilly.
In the eighth inning UCI was able to score six runs on three hits. The Anteaters loaded the bases, and the first run came across when Zach Robinson was hit by a pitch. Then with a full count, Cody Cipriano leaned into a pitch for an apparent hit-by-pitch situation, however the home plate umpire ruled that the pitch would have been ruled a ball, therefore walking the batter to allow another run to score. UCI then scored their remaining runs on a Ben Orloff RBI single, a two-run single by Chad Lundahl and a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Lowenstein.
Singleton led the offense for the Toreros going 2-for-5 with one RBI and one homerun.
Russell Holzhauer (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros allowing six runs on two hits in one inning of work. Dylan Axelrod (1-1) picked up the win for UCI allowing no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings of work.
USD will return to action of Friday as they head to Athens, GA for a three-game set with the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia. Friday's game is set for a 7 p.m. start, Saturday's game is set for a 1 p.m. start and Sunday's game will begin at noon.
