San Diego Finishes 2007 Season With Doubleheader Victory

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego scored two runs in the seventh inning and one in the 11th inning to rally for a 5-4, extra-inning win in the final doubleheader of the season. The University of San Diego softball team swept Portland State in a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex.

The twin bill marked the end of the regular season for both teams. San Diego finishes with an 8-12 record in the PCSC and 24-26 overall. Portland State finished 23-34 and 8-10 in the PCSC.

Down 4-2, Carey Casciola's RBI single in the 11th inning lifted San Diego to a 5-4 win in game one. San Diego forced extra innings with two runs in the seventh. Celine Pujol pinched hit and reached on a double. Nichole Valenzuela hit a triple cutting the Vikings lead 4-3. Valenzuela was thrown out at home trying to score on a fielder's choice by Casciola's. Kathleen Bonja followed with a double to score Casciola and tied the game 4-4.

In game two, Jennifer Ellenbeck hit an RBI single in the first inning to give San Diego a 1-0 lead, then hit a sac fly in the third inning to extend the lead to 3-0, and hit an RBI single to lift USD to a 7-0 lead.

Offensively for USD, Jennifer Ellenbeck hit a combined 5-for-8 with one double and three RBI. Carey Casciola hit 5-for-10 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Nichole Valenzuela hit 5-for-10 as well with one double, one triple, one RBI, and two runs scored.

Defensively for the Toreros, Katie Jo Nelson picked up a complete game, striking out six batters. Christina Haake recorded her 100th appearance in her career to hold the No. 3 spot on the all-time appearances list, pitching a complete game.

San Diego finishes the season with an 8-12 PCSC mark and a 24-26 overall mark. PCSC all-conference honors will be announced with in the next two months.
