LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Two second half goals in Thursday afternoon's match against the Lions lifted the Toreros to a 2-0 win as San Diego remains in first place in the West Coast Conference.
The win at Sullivan Field on Thursday afternoon puts USD at 5-6-3 overall and 5-1-0 in the WCC. The Lions (4-5-5, 2-3-1 WCC) suffer their first home loss in a conference game this season.
LMU controlled the play for much of the first half, as evidenced by its eight corner kicks in the half and the three shots that grazed either the post or the crossbar.
The Toreros returned in the second half and took control of the match with eight corner kicks recorded.
San Diego put the first goal on the board on an unassisted goal by Trevor May in the 70th minute, his second of the season. May found himself with the ball after junior Patrick Sampson came out to play a free kick and had it go through his hands to the waiting foot of May, who knocked it home for the 1-0 lead.
Andrew Feld extended the Torero lead in the 86th minute with his fifth of the season from an assist from JT Howlan. Howlan dribbled the ball up the left side of the field past an LMU defender then passed it off to Feld inside the penalty box on a 1v1 and went right around Sampson to score.
San Diego had other scoring opportunities to breakaway but were unable to connect with the net.
The two teams shot well as the Toreros recorded 11 to LMU's 13. Kelin Briones tallied two saves while Patrick Sampson had seven.
With this afternoon's victory, head coach Seamus McFadden improves to 299-216-47 lifetime record. He aims to reach 300 when the Toreros return home to Torero Stadium to finish the two-match series with the Lions at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
