MALIBU, Calif. - Senior midfielder Ashley Kirk's first goal of the season lifted the 14th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Pepperdine University Friday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 12-3-2 overall, move to 4-0-0 in the WCC and have now won five consecutive matches. With the loss, the Waves fall to 6-9-2 overall, and 1-3-1 in the WCC.
San Diego scored the lone goal of the match in the 24th minute of action. A Pepperdine defender committed a foul on the left side of the field, setting up a free kick. Junior defender Natalie Vinti took the kick for the Toreros and bowed the ball into a crowded goal box, where Kirk rose above all players and headed the ball into the back of the net to give USD a 1-0 victory.
USD's senior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron picked up her seventh shutout of the season in goal as she allowed no goals and recorded six saves. Pepperdine's Kayla Stolte was saddled with the loss in goal for the Waves as she allowed one goal and recorded eight saves.
San Diego was outshot 15-10 and the Waves also held a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they head to Los Angeles, to take on Loyola Marymount University in a 1 p.m. WCC match.
