SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of San Diego Toreros were unable to find their stride as they fall 4-1 against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a rainy and physical match. The loss leaves the Toreros still in first place at 6-3 in the West Coast Conference standings and 6-8-3 overall with both the Dons of University of San Francisco and the Bulldogs tied for second place in the conference standings two points behind USD.
San Diego and Gonzaga recorded quick goals in the first half. Tye Perdido scored Gonzaga's first goal of the season at 18:07 on an assist from Collin Harrison. Harrison sent a left-to-right feed to Perdido and he drilled a shot to the upper right of the goal from nearly 20 yards out.
Only 33 seconds later, San Diego tallied the equalizer. Andrew Feld received a pass from up field on the right side and shot from 25 yards, the ball skipping on wet grass and finding the far corner.
The Bulldogs managed to take the lead before halftime at 2-1 after senior Bryan Mullaney recorded Gonzaga's second goal at 35:41. The play started when Conor Baranski's straightaway shot was batted out by USD keeper Kelin Briones and Mullaney found the rebound on the right side and followed up for the secondary shot.
The Bulldogs managed to get an insurance goal early in the second half by Zach Smith at 50:11. Smith took the pass on the right side, dribbled down inside 20 yards and shot to the far post to beat Briones.
A minute later Gonzaga all but put the match away when Nick Love scored a goal for the fourth straight match when he took a long pass from Mitchell Weller, dribbled in past Briones and beat him from 12 yards straightaway.
Gonzaga missed a chance to increase the lead at 71:55 when Conor Baranski was taken down for a penalty kick, however Briones dove low to his right following the ball to make the save.
San Diego continues their road trip as they face the University of Portland Pilots at the Clive Charles soccer complex on Sunday, November 9 at 1:00 p.m. as they battle to remain in sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference.
