MALIBU, Calif. - Freshman right-hander Kyle Blair tossed a two-hit gem to help lead the seventh-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (36-13, 14-3 WCC) to a 2-0 win over No. 13 Pepperdine University (28-14, 9-4 WCC), Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 37-13 overall, 15-3 in the WCC and have clinched a berth into the WCC Championship series. With the loss, the Waves fall to 28-15 overall and 9-5 in the WCC.
Blair (6-3) was dominating on the mound for the Toreros as he didn't give up his first hit of the game until the top of the fourth inning, and then only surrendered one more hit for the remainder of his outing. Blair finished his day allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out seven in 7.2 innings of work. Scott Alexander (5-3) was saddled with the loss for the Waves as he allowed two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.
USD wasted no time in scoring as they scored the only two runs of the game on one hit in the top of the first inning. With two outs, James Meador got things started with a stand-up double down the right field line. Then four consecutive walks to Sean Nicol, Logan Gelbrich, Josh Romanski and Jose Valerio pushed across the two runs to give USD a 2-0 lead.
Offensively for the Toreros, Meador led the way as he went 2-for-4 with one double and Romanski went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the offense.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. non-conference game against UCLA in Los Angeles.
