Toreros Tie With Pilots 0-0 In Double Overtime

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 16 ranked University of San Diego men's soccer team knotted up their match at 0-0 against the Portland Pilots on Friday night at Torero Stadium as neither team could score through the double overtime period. It was only the second match that the Toreros have been in overtime and their first tie of the season.

The evening included a new season high for the Toreros as well as a celebration to honor Head Coach Seamus McFadden for his 300th career victory. San Diego recorded a season best 21 shots and tied their second best record of shots on goal with eight.

With the tie, San Diego moves to 11-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the WCC while the Pilots move to 8-4-5 overall and 3-3-4 in the WCC.

The match started out with USD in control recording two shots in the first ten minutes and eight shots in the first half. The Toreros outshot the pilots 8-3 in the first half. Patrick Wallen was first to strike for the Toreros with a shot from inside the penalty box which went wide.

After the intermission, USD came out looking to score. The Toreros put up eight shots in the second half to Portland's two shots. In the 88th minute, Stephen Posa fired off a shot from 30 yards out that was on target but was saved by Portland goalkeeper Austin Guerrero. Regulation ended with the score tied at 0-0 sending the match to overtime.

The Toreros recorded two corner kicks in the first overtime period with a solid shot by senior defender Tim Grey from inside the penalty box which sailed wide. The score still 0-0, USD came out for the second overtime period still itching for the golden goal. USD managed to get off three shots in the final overtime period including one by defender Ryan Peterman in the 107th minute. Peterman dribbled through defenders from left to right entering the penalty box and taking a wicked shot that was headed for the net, however Guerrero was there to save it and the match would end at 0-0.

San Diego goalkeeper Kelin Briones recorded four saves on the night and allowed no goals. Portland's Guerrero was busy all evening with eight saves in all, four in the second half, and no goals allowed. The Toreros tallied 12 corner kicks to Portland's five while the foul margin was nearly even in 15-16 in favor of Portland.

The No. 16 Toreros have a day of rest before they return to the field to take on WCC opponent Gonzaga Sunday afternoon wrapping up their home schedule and honoring their eight seniors. The Bulldogs recorded a 2-1 loss against Loyola Marymount as they travel to San Diego. USD remains in first place in the WCC standings with 22 points.

The Bulldogs and the Toreros will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. at Torero Stadium on Sunday, November 8.
