Final Stats
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego swimming and diving team had the lead 114-112 over the Vandals from University of Idaho with the 200 yard freestyle relay remaining in the meet. The USD "A" squad (Levesque, Yoon, Gleason, and Kimmel) missed first place by two seconds as San Diego took second place in the final event losing 125-118.
The diving team kept the Toreros from falling too far behind in the Western Athletic Conference dual meet with the help of Addy Bednarski taking second place with a 221.93, Amy Bogart with a 217.65 taking third place, and Heather Hippensteel in fourth place with a 203.48 in the first 1 meter round of diving. In the second round of diving, USD's diving team took the top two spots with Hippensteel taking first with a 235.05 and Bednarski taking second with a 203.40 earning the team 13 points.
In the opening relay, the USD "A" squad (Deckard, Andruzzi, Geerdes, and Finucane) finished in first place with a 3:56.16 time, two seconds ahead of second place Idaho. That gave USD an early 20-16 lead. Sarah Gleason followed with a second place finish in the 1000 freestyle (10:34.61) matching first place finisher Kaela Pettitt of the Vandals with the exact same splits three times late in the race. Gleason finished less than one second behind Pettitt.
Francesca Finucane finished in second place in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.59) followed by teammate Melissa Andruzzi in third place (1:56.71) earning USD seven points. Kristina Levesque took second place in the 50 freestyle in 24:59 followed by teammate Jacquilyn Kimmel in 24.63.
Sarah Geerdes finished in second place with a 4:36.60 in the 400 yard individual medley followed by Kristyn Deckard in third place with a 4:37.95. Jacquilyn Kimmel finished in second place for the Toreros in the 200 yard butterfly (2:14.80). Geerdes then captured first place in the 100 freestyle in 53.43 followed by teammate Francesca Finucane in second place with a 53.58.
Kristen Yoon earned a first place finish in the 200 yard backstroke (2:08.48) followed by teammate Kristyn Deckard in second place with a 2:09.39 time. The Toreros would earn two first place finishes rounding out the final individual events starting with Sarah Gleason in the 500 yard freestyle (5:14.64) and then Melissa Andruzzi in the 200 yard breaststroke with 2:23.50.
The Toreros return to the water on November 19 for a three-day meet in Long Beach, California at the Toshiba Classic. San Diego will face tough competition and look forward to the challenge at their first multi-day event of the season.
