SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of the Pacific Tigers (2-3) stunned the 11th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (3-3) with a 14-6 victory Saturday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the second inning, USD scored one run on two hits. Victor Sanchez got things started for the Toreros with a stand-up double to left field. Austin Green then drove in Sanchez with a RBI single up the middle to give USD a brief 1-0 lead.
The Tigers then answered with three runs on five hits in their half of the inning. The U of P runs came on Nick Longmire RBI single, Mike McKeever RBI single and a JB Brown RBI single to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Pacific would then score three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth inning, two in the fifth inning, four in the seventh inning and two in the eighth inning to take a 14-1 lead.
San Diego put on a late rally in the ninth inning by scoring five runs on seven hits. The USD runs came on a James Meador RBI single, a Tony Strazzara RBI single, a Jon Hotta RBI single and a Chris Engell 2-run single, which put the game at its final of 14-6.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they play a double header. At 10 a.m., USD will battle Kansas State University and at 2 p.m., USD will take on Nevada at Cunningham, Stadium.
