April 24, 2009

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team recorded 14 hits, but it wasn't enough, as the University of Portland defeated USD, 12-4, in a West Coast Conference game at USD's Cunningham Stadium Friday afternoon.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 25-17 overall, and 8-5 in the WCC. With the win, the Pilots improve to 21-18 overall and 5-8 in the WCC.

The Pilots got on the scoreboard first as they scored one run in the top of the third inning on a Bryant Krause RBI single to left field, scoring Rocky Gale, who had singled, to give Portland a 1-0 lead.

The Pilots then added one run in the top of the fourth inning on a Kevin Armijo solo home run and added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning and a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-0 lead.

San Diego finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chris Engell led off the inning with a double to right center field and James Meador then hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to move the score to 7-2.

The Toreros then continued to chip away at the lead as they scored one run in the seventh inning on two hits. Sean Nicol kept his hitting streak alive, as he got things started with a stand-up double to left centerfield to improve the hit streak to 13 games. Two batters later, Meador drove him in with a RBI single to center field to cut the deficit to four at 7-3.

After Portland took back one run in the eighth inning, USD would score for the third consecutive inning on a Bryan Haar RBI single, but that is as close as the Toreros could get as the Pilots put the game out of reach with a four-run ninth inning to put the game at its final of 12-4.

Offensively for the Toreros, Meador led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with one home run and three RBI.

Matt Thomson (5-3) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 13 hits, while striking gout 11 batters in 7.1 innings of work. Kyle Kraus (4-4) was credited with the win, as he allowed four runs on 12 hits in 7.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they continue the three-game series with the Pilots at Cunningham Stadium.
