SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 13th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team cruised its way to a 3-0 season-opening win over visiting Cal State Northridge Friday evening at Torero Stadium.
After dominating the time of play throughout the first half, San Diego finally got on the scoreboard at the 44:08 mark. Natalie Vinti took a corner kick for the Toreros and the ball volleyed around a bit in front of the goal before freshman Sierra Ferreira found it and passed the ball to freshman striker Erica Peeples, who then hit a one-timer past the Northridge goalkeeper to give USD a 1-0 lead going into the break.
San Diego wasted no time scoring in the second half, as sophomore forward Stephanie Ochs controlled a lead pass from Ferrira, then split two defenders and hit a laser strike into the top right corner of the goal to double the USD lead at 2-0 at the 47:18 mark.
The Toreros weren't done yet, as in the 89th minute, Vinti again took a corner kick for the Toreros, and the ball sailed into a crowded goal box, where Katie Bavasi put her head on it, only to the have the Northridge goalkeeper record a save, but freshman forward Lexi Deol was right there for the rebound and put the ball into the back of the net to put the match at its final of 3-0.
Courtney Parsons picked up the shutout in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed no goals and recorded three saves. Leah Elliott was saddled with the loss for the Matadors as she allowed three goals and recorded four saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they head to Bakersfield, Calif. to take on the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield in a 7 p.m. match.
