SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three different Toreros recorded double-digit kills, as the 19th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over visiting Pepperdine University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 win, the Toreros improve to 17-4 overall, remain perfect in WCC action at 7-0 and run their winning streak to nine. With the loss, the Waves fall to 14-7 overall and 5-2 in the WCC. >
Senior opposite Ali Troost led all players with her 16 kills, while also recording nine digs to help pace the Torero offense. Senior outside Amy Mahinalani DeGroot also had a huge match, as she recorded 14 kills, hit for a .379 clip and she racked up eight digs, while Chloe Ferrari rounded off the offensive attack with 12 kills and hit for a .417 clip. Senior setter Kelsi Myers recorded 39 assists, while helping steer the USD offense to a .234 team attack percentage and C'era Oliveira had a team-best 15 digs.
In the first set, the Toreros raced out to a 4-1 lead, as a Troost kill sparked the run that was capped on a Pepperdine attack error. The Toreros would maintain a 3-4 point edge over a majority of the set, until late when Pepperdine took a 20-18 lead. The Toreros then responded with three straight points to regain the lead and force the Waves into a timeout. The Toreros then held onto that momentum and claimed the first set 25-22.
In the second set, the Toreros again raced out to an early advantage at 5-1, and would eventually go on to build up a lead as big as 10 at 19-9, but the Waves then began to take advantage of several USD miscues to come rallying back to pull to within five at 24-19, but could not get any closer as USD held on for a 25-20 win to into the break up two sets to none.
In the third and final set, USD found the early momentum yet again, as they grabbed a 4-1 lead. However the Waves would not allow the Toreros to gain much more ground as the two teams then sea sawed back and forth a bit, until Pepperdine would pull back to within one at 22-21, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. Out of the timeout, San Diego put things away as they completed the sweep with a 25-23 win.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Portland, to take on the University of Portland in a 7 p.m. WCC match.
