CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 17th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team ran its winning streak to eight games with a 4-1 win over Oregon State University Monday evening in a non-conference game.
The Toreros (31-16) wasted no time in scoring as they pushed across one run on three hits in the top of the first inning. Chris Engell got things going with a single up the middle, to run his hitting streak to 20 games. Engell then moved to third on James Meador's single up the middle, and Tony Strazzara hit an RBI single to right field to score Engell and give USD the 1-0 early advantage.
OSU (24-18) would then even the score in the bottom of the fourth inning, as they scored one run on Stefen Romero solo home run.
The Toreros then regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring one run on two hits. With two outs, Meador got things started with a double to right center, and Strazzara would drive in Meador with a RBI single to left field, moving the score to 2-1.
USD would then add two more runs to its lead in the top of the eighth inning on two hits. Engel drew a walk to lead off the inning and he moved to third on a Meador double to left field. Strazzara then singled through the left side to score Engell, and a Nick McCoy ground-out would scored Meador to give USD a 4-1 lead.
Offensively for the Toreros, Strazzara led the way as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Meador also had a good day going 3-for-4 with two doubles.
Chris Jensen (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on four hits in 6.0 innings of work. Matt Thomson picked up his fourth save of the season as he allowed no runs on three hits, while striking out six in 3.0 innings of work. The Beavers' Craig Sitton (1-2) was saddled with the loss as he allowed two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work.
San Diego will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Eugene to take on the 22nd-ranked Oregon Ducks in a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
