Toreros Drop Heartbreaker to Hawaii, 4-3

June 4, 2010

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 15th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team was stunned with a 4-3 loss to the University of Hawaii Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Tempe Regional.

San Diego will not wait to see what happens with the Arizona State and Milwaukee game, and they will play the loser of that game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

USD (36-21) jumped out to the early lead as in the bottom of the second inning, Bryan Haar got things started with a one-out single. Mike Ferraro then launched his third home run of the season over the right field fence to give USD a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, Hawaii (34-26) was able to take advantage of a USD fielding error to even the score. Jeffery Van Doornum reached on a fielding error, and David Freitas then launched a two-run homer over the centerfield fence to move the score to 2-2.

After the Rainbow took a one run lead in the eighth inning, the Toreros would answer with a run the bottom half of the inning. Kevin Muno led off the inning and reached based when he was hit by a pitch. Nick McCoy then moved Muno up one base on a sacrifice bunt. After Chris Engell moved Muno to third with an infield ground out, Tony Strazzara then drew a walk to give the Toreros runners at the corners with two outs. Zach Walters then reached on a fielding error by the Hawaii second baseman, which allowed Muno to score from third to tie the game at 3-3.

Then with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning, Matt Thomson hit the next batter to push across the go-ahead run and give Hawaii the win.

Offensively, Ferraro led the way as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Harr was the only other Torero to record multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Thomson (1-3) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.0 innings of work. Hawaii's Lenny Linsky (4-0) picked up the win for the Rainbow as he allowed one run on no hits in 2.0 innings of work.
