SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a 15-kill and 14-dig performance from senior right side Ali Troost, the 24th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised its way to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-15) win over Gonzaga University in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Troost led all players with her 15 kills on 29 swings, while only committing three attack errors to post a .414 attack percentage. Freshman middle hitter Chloe Ferrari also had a great night as she had 10 kills on 17 swings to hit for a .588 clip. Amy Mahinalani DeGroot led the team's defense with 15 digs, while racking up eight kills. Kelsi Myers record 40 assists while steering the Torero offense to a .363 team attack percentage.
In the first set, San Diego jumped out to an 8-2 lead as a Ashton Basch kill ignited the run that was capped on a GU attack error. USD kept the pedal to the medal as they then used a 6-3 run to take a commanding 14-5 lead, and they never looked back as they eased their way to a 25-17 win.
In the second set, USD hit for a match-high .455 clip, as they raced out to a 13-5 lead, which forced the Zags into a timeout. GU could not figure out the USD offense or defense in the set, as the Toreros continued to roll in the second frame and claimed a two-sets to none lead going into the break with a 25-11 win.
Out of the break, USD would not slow down one bit, as they opened the final frame with an 11-4 run, and never looked back as they hit .270 and held the Zags to a .027 attack percentage in claiming the match with a 25-15 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. WCC match against the University of Portland.
