SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team won game two of a doubleheader against the Seattle University Redhawks Sunday afternoon at the USD Softball complex. The result of game one was a 4-3 loss in extra innings. The split moves the Toreros to a 2-4 record overall on the season.
In the late game, USD pushed across the run in the fourth and fifth innings as the Toreros recorded five hits in the game. Jessica Tieszen lead off the fourth inning with a Homerun that sailed 220 feet over right-center field lifting USD to a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Lauren Tomey reached on a Redhawk error and Stalberger was thrown out at first base on a sacrifice bunt to the catcher which allowed Tomey to advance to second base. Tomey then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Kristen Gensler grounded out to the short stop as Tomey chose to hold at third base. Dana Prelsnik smashed an RBI-double into deep left-center field that allowed Tomey to score lifting the Toreros to a 2-0 lead.
San Diego's defense held strong as they went on to win 2-0.
In game one, USD fell 4-3 in extra innings. The Toreros took the lead in the first inning when Taylor Hensley recorded an RBI-single to right field scoring Kristen Gensler. In the second inning Kana Prelsnik doubled to centerfield and earned a trip home off a Gensler single to right field giving the Toreros a 2-0 lead. Seattle scored a run in the third and fourth innings tying the game at 2-2. Both teams battled for five innings to push across a run snapping the tie. In the 10th inning, Seattle scored two runs taking a 4-2 lead. San Diego mounted a comeback rally as Jessica Tieszen was placed on second base per the international tie-breaker rule. Soto flied out to centerfield allowing Tieszen to move to third base. Kylie Ordos grounded out to the pitcher allowing Tieszen to then score cutting the Redhawk lead 4-3 however Dana Prelsnik was unable to keep the rally going grounding out to shortstop as the Redhawks went on to win 4-3.
Three pitchers saw action today, Kaitlin Healy went five innings striking out five batters on the day. Jenny Lahitte went five innings striking out nine batters on the day. Cassie Coleman went seven innings picking up her first win pitching seven innings and striking out five batters.
USD prepares this week for the Eller Media Stadium Classic hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nevada. The tournament starts on Friday, March 4 and will be USD's first opportunity to play on the road in the 2011 campaign. They open the tournament against host UNLV at 3:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium.
