Toreros Win Series Over Sacramento State 3-1

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team returns home after winning their opening PCSC series 3-1 against the Sacramento State Hornets with a 5-2 win followed by a 8-0 win at Shea Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Toreros improve to 13-14 overall and 3-1 in PCSC play. The Hornets fall to 9-19 and 1-3 on the season so far. In the PCSC snapshot, the Toreros are currently tied for first with LMU who went 3-1 on the weekend as the two teams hold on to a piece of first place.

San Diego opened with a 5-2 win over Sacramento State. After solid defense in the top half of the inning, the Toreros went to work offensively putting up four runs including two homeruns. With one out and Kristen Gensler at second base, Taylor Hensley went deep over centerfield with a two-RBI homerun lifting USD to a 2-0 lead. Jessica Tieszen singled to left field bringing up Celeste Soto who bombed one deep to centerfield for another two-RBI homerun giving USD a 4-0 lead. The Hornets got a run in the sixth inning which USD responded with a run pushing the lead to 5-1. The Hornets got one more run in the seventh inning with a late rally attempt but without much luck as the Toreros went on to win 5-2.

Kaitlin Healy is pitched a complete game improving to a 5-4 record on the season striking out four batters and allowing only four hits by the Hornets.

In game two, the Toreros quickly took care of business as they run-ruled Sacramento State in five innings with an 8-0 victory. With a 1-0 lead through three innings, the Toreros went to work batting through the line-up picking up five runs. Lauren Tomey lead off the inning with a double and would later score on a throwing error by the Hornets lifting USD to a 2-0 lead. Kristen Gensler would pick up an RBI-single to left field giving USD a 3-0 lead, while Taylor Hensley would tally her second long-ball of the day hitting a three-RBI homerun over left field as USD took a 6-0 lead. Lauren Tomey would lead off again with a single through the right side and advance to third on a Kylie Ordos double to right-centerfield. Tomey and Ordos would score on a Dana Prelsnik RBI-double to right-centerfield ending the game at 8-0 in five innings.

Jenny Lahitte picks up another win improving to 4-5 on the season striking out five batters in 5.0 innings of work.

The Toreros hit .250 as a team for the weekend with 19 runs scored and three homeruns. The pitching staff struck out 17 and had a 1.40 ERA for the weekend series.

San Diego returns home to San Diego with a four game series against the Cal-State Bakersfield Roadrunners on April 16-17. USD's third annual Military Appreciate Day will be held on Saturday with pre-game and in-game activities all day Saturday.
