Toreros Complete Sweep of CSU Bakersfield

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team completed the four-game sweep of Coastal Division opponent Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday Afternoon winning game one 8-7 followed by a 7-1 win in game two. The Toreros two victories were backed up by some powerful offensive hitting including a three-run homerun by Taylor Hensley in the third inning of the first game.

San Diego improves to 17-14 overall with a 7-1 PCSC record to go along with a 6-6 home record. The Roadrunners fall to 14-26 overall and 2-6 in PCSC play.

The Toreros big inning came in the fourth with USD already up 3-2. With one out, Megan Walsh got on base due to a Bakersfield error and advanced to second when Kylie Ordos walked. Kristen Gensler grounded out to first base which sparked a two-out rally by San Diego. Dana Prelsnik hit an RBI-single to left field allowing Walsh to score and moving Ordos ahead to third base. Taylor Hensley hit a key two-RBI-double to left-centerfield scoring Ordos and Prelsnik lifting USD to a 6-2. Jessica Tieszen had a solid day at the play including an RBI-single to left-centerfield pushing USD ahead 7-2. Both teams volleyed back and forth for the lead when the Roadrunners scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth cutting the lead to 7-4. San Diego responded with a run in the fifth increasing their lead 8-4. Bakersfield put up three runs in a sixth inning rally but were halted as the Toreros went on to win 8-7.

Kaitlin Healy pitched 5.1 innings of work striking out two batters picking up the win improving to 7-4 on the season. Teammate Jenny Lahitte recorded 1.2 innings of work with one strikeout tallying the save.

The Torero hit parade continued in game two as they put up one run in the first inning striking first at the lead. Their big inning came in the third when Prelsnik opened with a single to right field and then stole second base. Hensley struck out while Tieszen and Soto both walked loading the bases. Lauren Tomey recorded a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Prelsnik and Tieszen and moving Soto to second base. Shimizu flied out the left field followed by Walsh hitting at RBI-single to left field and advancing to second base on the throw while Soto scored. The Toreros would add two more runs in the sixth and one more run in the seventh inning while Bakersfield's only run came in the second inning. San Diego went on to win 7-1.

Cassidy Coleman pitched her sixth complete game of the season and improves to 4-4 on the season with six strikeouts in the game.

San Diego will spend the week preparing for their road trip against Santa Clara to continue their hunt for the PCSC Coastal Division title. With Easter Sunday on April 24, the Toreros and Broncos will face off on Friday, April 22 in a 12:00 doubleheader followed by their series wrap up on Saturday, April 23 in a 12:00 doubleheader.
