SARATOGA, Calif. - After shutting out the Broncos in Saturday's doubleheader with 8-0 and 9-0 wins sweeping the series, the Toreros remain in sole possession of first place in the Coastal Division of the PCSC.
The Toreros are 11-1 in league play atop the coastal division standings with a 21-14 overall record. The sweep of Santa Clara on the road gives USD a 10-3 record. The Broncos fall to 6-23 overall and 2-10 in conference.
The Toreros matched their second-best runs in an inning mark of seven when USD recorded a seven-run third inning to defeat the Broncos in game one on Saturday. Dana Prelsnik started off the inning by getting on-base from a Bronco error and then advanced to second base on a Taylor Hensley walk. Jessica Tieszen hit an RBI-single to left field allowing Prelsnik to score and Hensley moving to third base. A bad throw by the Broncos moved Tieszen up to second base. Celeste Soto hit a sacrifice fly picking up the RBI as Tieszen scored. Lauren Tomey scored a solo homerun over centerfield as the Toreros took a 5-0 lead. Megan Walsh walked and moved to second base when Kimberlee Shimizu singled through the left side. Kylie Ordos hit an RBI-single to left-centerfield as Walsh scored. Kristen Gensler rounded out the scoring run by the Toreros with a two-RBI double to centerfield giving the Toreros an 8-0 lead as they held off the Broncos ending the game in the fifth inning on the run-rule.
Kaitlin Healy went the distance striking out three batters in five innings of work allowing only two hits for Santa Clara. She improves to 9-4 on the season with the win.
In game two, the Toreros posted five runs in the third inning and four runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-0 win. With one out in the third inning, Kristen Gensler hit a single through the left side and then advanced to third base on a double by Prelsnik. Taylor Hensley was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Tieszen who walked picking up the RBI as Gensler scored. Celeste Soto hit a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Prelsnik and Hensley. Lauren Tomey picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly scoring Tieszen. Megan Walsh hit an RBI-single to centerfield as the Toreros jumped out to a 5-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Soto hit a three-RBI homerun over the left-centerfield wall. The Toreros picked up four runs in the seventh inning going on to win 9-0 over the Broncos.
Jenny Lahitte struck out seven batters in six innings of work. She improves to 5-5 on the season allowing only two hits by the Broncos.
The Toreros out-hit the Broncos 17-4 combined over the two games.
San Diego returns home and will spend the week preparing for Saint Mary's at home in their final homestand of the 2011 campaign. Senior Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 1 prior to the start of the game. The doubleheader scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday will start at noon at the USD Softball Complex.
