SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros remain in first place despite a split Saturday afternoon against the Saint Mary's Gaels. After dropping game one 3-0 ending their 11-game win streak, the Toreros came back in game two with a thrilling 5-4 victory that came down to the wire.
San Diego moves to 22-15 overall and 12-2 in the PCSC on the day. Saint Mary's moves to 11-21 overall and 7-7 in conference action.
In the Toreros thrilling game two, it was Kimberlee Shimizu who hit the walk-off RBI-single to win the game for the Toreros in the seventh inning. After both teams jockeyed for a run through the first three innings, it was San Diego who unloaded four runs on four hits in the fourth innings. One of those hits was a Taylor Hensley three-RBI double that lifted USD to that 4-0 lead. Later in the seventh inning after the Gaels' tied it up at 4-4, the Toreros put together one of their two-out rally's to push across the winning run. Jessica Tieszen got on first after a Saint Mary's error and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Celeste Soto put a fielder's choice in play as the Gaels' caught Tieszen on the play leaving Soto at first. Lauren Tomey hit a fielder's choice as Saint Mary's again took out the lead runner sending Soto to the dugout and leaving Tomey at first base. Megan Walsh hit a key single to the outfield which allowed Tomey to wheel around the third base and Walsh advanced to second on the throw. With runners in scoring position, Shimizu hit the game-winning RBI-single to left field allowing Tomey to score and giving USD the 5-4 victory.
Cassidy Coleman pitched five solid innings allowing only two hits and striking out one Gael, Jenny Lahitte pitched two innings striking out one batter and allowing only three hits.
In game one, the Toreros struggled to find a rhythm as they were shut out 3-0. Kylie Ordos and Dana Prelsnik each had hits for the Toreros. Kaitlin Healy pitched 5.2 innings striking out three batters while Jenny Lahitte pitched 1.1 innings in relief striking out one batter.
The Toreros wrap up their home season on Sunday at the USD Softball Complex as they celebrate senior day honoring Kristen Gensler, Celeste Soto, and Megan Walsh for their outstanding four years with the Toreros. Ceremonies begin early so arrive before the scheduled noon first pitch.
