SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 3-1 West Coast Conference game to No. 24 Gonzaga University Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 7-21 overall, 0-2 in the WCC and have now lost three straight games. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 18-9-1 overall, move to 2-0 in the WCC and have captured the series with USD.
The Zags got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the bottom of the first inning on a Royce Bolinger sacrifice fly to centerfield, which scored Eric Lane, who singled, to give GU the 1-0 lead.
After Gonzaga scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Toreros managed to cut the lead in half with one run on two hits in the top of the eighth inning. Corey LeVier led off the inning with a single, then Julian Duran singled, but LeVier was thrown out at third on the same play, but Duran safely made it to second on the throw. Kevin Muno then drew a walk and Bryan Haar reached on an error to load the bases with two outs. Kris Bryant then drew a bases-loaded walk to push across Duran and move the score to 2-1.
Gonzaga then took back that run in the bottom half of the eighth inning on a Cameron Edman solo home run, to put the game at its final of 3-1.
Haar again led the USD offense for a second consecutive day as he went 3-for-4, while both Zach Sullivan and LeVier went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Chris Jensen (0-5) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work. Tyler Olsen (5-1) picked up the win for the Bulldogs, as he allowed one unearned run on eight hits in 7.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they conclude the three-game series with the Zags at 1 p.m.
