Toreros Fall in back-to-back games against LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego Toreros hit a speed bump Saturday in their pursuit of the Coastal Division Championship at Smith Field as they fell 3-1 in game one and 2-1 in game two to the Loyola Marymount Lions. The two losses on the day put USD and LMU tied for first place for the Coastal Division as they head into the final day of play on Sunday.

The Toreros fall to 24-17 overall and 14-4 in PCSC action while the Lions improve to 30-25 overall and 14-4 in the conference.

In game one, the Toreros fell 3-1 after a solid start to the game by the Toreros, which included a big single by Kristen Gensler to centerfield to lead off the game and two walks in the first three innings, LMU posted two runs in the third inning. San Diego responded in the top of the sixth cutting the Lions lead 2-1 when Lauren Tomey hit a single to centerfield and made it home two batters later when Megan Walsh hit an RBI-single down the left field line. The Lions added an insurance run a half-inning later and went on to win 3-1 in game one.

Both teams recorded seven hits on the day. Kaitlin Healy takes the loss falling to 10-6 striking out four batters on the day in 5.2 innings of work. Jenny Lahitte came in for 0.2 innings facing two batters to finish the game.

In game twoo, USD fell behind 2-0 in the fourth innings. San Diego fired up a rally in the fifth inning when Tomey lead off with a walk and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Celeste Soto. Two batters later, Kimberlee Shimizu hit a solid RBI-single to centerfield allowing Tomey to score cutting LMU's lead 2-1. USD was unable to push across the tying run as LMU took the win 2-1.

Cassidy Coleman pitched her eighth complete game striking out three batters in six innings of work.

With the two losses, San Diego must win both games Sunday in order to advance to win the Coastal Division and advance to the PCSC Championship for an opportunity at the Automatic Qualifier to the post season.
