LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego Toreros run for the Coastal Division Championship ended Sunday afternoon at Smith Field against the Loyola Marymount Lions. The Toreros made a valiant come-from-behind rally in game two as they attempted to steal a portion of the Coastal Division Championship but came up short in extra innings as they lost 5-4. The Toreros fell in game one 12-0.
The Toreros end the season with a 24-19 overall record and their best finish in since joining the PCSC at 14-6 conference record to go along with a second place finish in the Coastal Division.
In game two, the Toreros fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. The Lions added a run in the third inning as they went up 4-0. In the bottom of the third inning, San Diego put a rally together when Kimberlee Shimizu punched a single through the left side and then advanced on a pass ball to second base. Kylie Ordos grounded out to third base moving Shimizu to third base. Gensler hit an RBI double scoring Shimizu as the Toreros got on the board 4-1. The Toreros started rolling as Dana Prelsnik hit an RBI-single to centerfield scoring Gensler from second base. Taylor Hensley hit a two-run homer over left-centerfield bringing across Prelsnik and tying the game at 4-4. The game went into extra innings as both teams played solid defense. It was the Lions in the eighth inning that put up the winning run going on to win 5-4.
Starter Kaitlin Healy struck out two batters in 5.0 innings of work. Cassidy Coleman falls to 6-5 on the season striking out five batters in 3.0 innings of work.
The game one loss is the first time San Diego been mercy-ruled all season. San Diego's lone hit of the opening game came from Celeste Soto, a single to down the right field line. Kristen Gensler got on base with an error and Dana Prelsnik was walked. LMU recorded three runs in the third inning and nine runs in the fifth inning.
The Torero pitching staff struck out two batters in the game pitching five innings in game one.
