SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team kicked off the 2012 season by splitting their two contests on Friday evening on the first day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic at the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros were shutout by No. 9 Washington 5-0 in their first game, but bounced back with a strong 4-1 victory over Notre Dame in the nightcap.

Tieszen wound up safely at second base while Kurtz scored from third in the process.
It would stay 2-0 until the top of the fifth when shortstop Kylie Ordos connected for her first-career home run, a towering solo shot to left field. In that same inning, Tieszen tallied her second RBI of the game with a sharp single up the middle that scored Kurtz from second base and put USD up 4-0.
Notre Dame (0-2) answered in their half of the sixth when Dani Miller hit a solo home run to left field, making it 4-1. The Irish would threaten in the seventh when Emilee Koerner scored on a wild pitch from Jenny Lahitte, but the Toreros were able to close out the win by a score of 4-2.
