SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team lost its second-straight one-run game with their 3-2 defeat at the hands of Nevada in the Gaucho Classic I from UC Santa Barbara's Campus Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The Toreros lost in walk-off fashion for the second-consecutive day as Nevada put up a run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the victory.
Standing out for the Toreros (3-5) on the day was catcher Taylor Hensley and right fielder Lauren Tomey, who each went 2-for-3. First baseman Caitlin Rooney picked up her fourth hit in as many games while also driving in a run for USD.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when USD struck with two runs in their half of the inning. Tomey led off the inning with a double down the left field line and was pinch-run for by Allison Stalberger. Rooney then singled to center, driving in Stalberger to put USD up 1-0. Two batters later, DP Kimberlee Shimizu doubled, plating pinch-runner Kylie McNutt and giving the Toreros a 2-0 advantage.
Nevada (4-10) answered immediately in the bottom of the fifth with Caylin Campbell's RBI ground out that scored Kortnee Wiley, making it 2-1. The Wolfpack then tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Sara Parsons picked up a run on a sacrifice fly off of USD reliever Cassidy Coleman.
Nevada's Megan Fincher ended the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single through the left side that scored Campbell and gave the Wolfpack the victory.
Coleman (1-3) took the loss for the Toreros with her 1.1 innings of work in relief where she gave up one run on two hits and struck out three. Torero starter Kaitlin Healy lasted 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Mallary Darby (4-4) earned the win for Nevada, going the distance while allowing two runs on six hits and adding four strikeouts.
USD finishes play at the Gaucho Classic on Sunday with a doubleheader. The Toreros will get a rematch with UNLV at 12:00pm before wrapping up the weekend with a 2:30pm contest against host UC Santa Barbara.
