SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team had to go into extra innings again, but was able to complete the four-game sweep of Santa Clara in Pacific Coast Softball Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros cruised to a 7-0 victory in game one behind another complete game by RHP Jenny Lahitte and battled to a 5-4 10-inning victory in game two.

Lahitte (11-6) tossed her sixth-consecutive complete game and extended her scoreless streak to 21.0 innings in picking up the win in game one. Third baseman Chloe Kaneko continued her torrid hitting by going 5-for-9 on the day with two RBI and a run scored.

Right fielder Lauren Tomey highlighted game two with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, driving in two and scoring a run. Meanwhile, catcher Taylor Hensley led the Toreros in game one with her 3-for-4 performance where she added an RBI and a run scored.

In game one, the Toreros (23-13, 10-2 PCSC) piled up 14 hits overall and tallied the majority of their runs with a five-run third inning. They added singles runs in the top of the fourth, with an RBI single by Jessica Tieszen, and the top of the sixth, with an RBI double from Hensley that gave USD their ultimate 7-0 advantage.

Santa Clara (8-36, 2-10 PCSC) put runners on base in six of the seven innings against Lahitte, but was unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Lahitte went all 7.0 innings, scattering six hits while striking out nine. Carissa Theis (3-10) was handed the loss for the Broncos after throwing 2.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

Game two started out rather shaky for the Toreros as Santa Clara took advantage of two early USD errors to go up 3-0 in the first inning. USD rallied back to tie it at 3-3 in the top of the third, but Santa Clara pulled back ahead with another run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Tomey ripped a two-out single through the right side in the top of the fifth that scored Tieszen to tie the game at 4-4.

From there it was a pitcher's duel as USD reliever Cassidy Coleman and Santa Clara starter Jessica Turner held each other's respective offenses in check for the next four innings. The Toreros just missed taking the lead on a number of clutch line drives that found Santa Clara gloves over those four innings.

It wasn't until the top of the 10th when the international tie-breaker rules took effect that the stalemate was broken. Katie Emerson dropped a single into center field to lead off the inning. Two batters later Dana Prelsnik ripped a shot to the shortstop that was mishandled, allowing Prelsnik to reach base and driving in Tomey for the go-ahead run in the process.

Santa Clara had runners on first and third with one out before Coleman (10-4) worked out of the jam by inducing consecutive popups to end the game and pick up the win.

Coleman turned in 9.0 innings of work in relief as she allowed one run (0 ER) on six hits with 13 strikeouts, her second-highest total this season. Turner (2-9) took the loss after throwing 10.0 innings, allowing five runs (4 ER) on 11 hits while striking out two and walking six.

USD will play their final non-conference game of the regular season when they host San Diego State on Wednesday, Apr. 18 for a 6:00 pm first pitch from the USD Softball Complex.
