Aug. 25, 2012

Box Score

AUSTIN, Texas - Behind a career-high 10 kills from Alaysia Brown, the 19th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team (2-0) picked up a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-22) win over Louisiana State University (0-2) Saturday morning in a non-conference match at the Burnt Orange Classic.

Sophomore middle hitter Alaysia Brown paced the Toreros offense with a career-high 10 kills on 17 swings, while only committing two errors, to hit for a .471 clip. Katie Hoekman also had a solid match, as she recorded nine kills, while Carrie Baird recorded seven kills and had a team-best 11 digs. Rachel Alvey led the team with 22 assists, while helping steer the San Diego offense to a .231 attack percentage.

In the first set, the Toreros got right to work; as an LSU attack error sparked an 8-3 San Diego run that was capped on a Kandiss Anderson service ace, giving the Toreros the early momentum. Then the Tigers managed to pull to within four at 10-6, but an Amber Tatsch kill ignited a 6-2 San Diego run to give the Toreros complete control of the frame and an 18-6 lead. The Toreros never looked back as they cruised their way to a 25-19 win.

In the second set, it was back and forth in the early going, but with the score knotted at 4-all, a Chloe Ferrari kill jump started a 4-0 USD run to force the Tigers into a timeout. Out of the break, the Toreros continued to click on all cylinders, as they put together a 10-5 run, grabbing an 18-9 lead, which forced the Tigers into another timeout. LSU was not able to overcome this deficit, as San Diego kept the hammer down and eased its way into a 25-14 win.

In the third set, LSU grabbed the early momentum and raced out to an 8-4 lead. A Ferrari kill then sparked a 5-1 Torero run, pulling San Diego into a 9-9 tie with the Tigers. The two teams began trading point-for-point over the next several volleys until the score was knotted at 18-all. Then a Sandra Lozic kill ignited a brief 3-0 run to give the Toreros some breathing room and a 21-18 lead. USD never surrendered the lead again as they completed the sweep with a 25-22 win.

The Toreros will return to action later this evening when they take on the host and No. 2-ranked Texas Longhorns at 5 p.m. (PT).
