LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego swim team put together a historic day of competition at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Friday at East Los Angeles College. Four USD records fell on the day and sophomore Keenan Lineback became the conference champion in the 400 IM.
Lineback swam a career-best 4:17.42 in the 400 IM finals, becoming USD's first conference champion in any event since the 2008-09 season. Lineback also earned an NCAA B cut in the process.
The Toreros started off the day strong with a record-setting performance by their 400 medley relay squad (Reierson, Andruzzi, Stone, Finucane). USD posted a time of 3:46.67, besting the previous record set in 2011 by just .02 of a second. The Toreros finished in seventh place in the event overall.
Senior Melissa Andruzzi beat her own team record in the 100 breaststroke when she finished at 1:03.24 (10th place overall), improving on the 1:03.62 she swam earlier this season.
Freshman Sarah Reierson jumped on the record-setting bandwagon on Friday as well. Reierson posted a team record in the 100 back with her swim of 56.24 (5th place), topping Kristyn Deckard's record of 56.47 established in 2011.
Finally, senior Jacquie Kimmel set a new Torero record in the 50 free in a time trial on Friday. Kimmel's 23.22 bested Sarah Geerdes' 2011 mark of 23.47.
In other action on the day, Kelly Stone turned in a new career-best in the 100 fly with her time of 56.68 (15th place). Likewise, Taylor Noonan established a new career-best in that same event at 57.19 (21st).
Francesca Finucane notched a top-10 finish in the 200 free, finishing in seventh place at 1:51.14.
In diving action at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., Mathilda Danckler placed seventh in the three-meter event, posting a final score of 250.40. With that, diving competition concludes for the Toreros in the Championships.
The Toreros wrapped up day three still sitting in sixth place in the overall points standings with 213 points. UC Davis (438) overtook Hawaii (429) for the top spot at the conclusion of Friday's action. Saturday marks the final day of competition at the conference championships.
