Toreros Rally Past Zags

SPOKANE, Wash. - The 25th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team rallied past Gonzaga University, 10-9, Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex.

With USD trailing 9-8 heading into the top of the ninth inning, USD put on their rally caps and were able to score a pair of runs. Dillon Haupt got things started with a one-out walk. Conner Jauch was then inserted as a pinch runner, and he took advantage of an error by the Gonzaga catcher, and moved to third base. Then after Austin Bailey drew a 2-out walk, Logan Davis drove in Jauch with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 9-all. Chris Woolley then drew a walk to load the bases, and AJ Robinson drew a bases-loaded walk to give USD the 10-9 victory.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 15-8 overall, move to 4-2 in the WCC and avoided the sweep of Gonzaga. With the win, the Zags fall to to 14-7-1 overall, and fall to 4-2 WCC.

USD got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the second a Jerod Smith RBI sacrifice bunt scored Andrew Daniel, who had doubled and stole third, to give USD a brief 1-0 lead.

GU would manage to score three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The GU runs came on a Mitchell Gunsolus RBI sacrifice fly, a Marco Gonzales RBI double and a bases-loaded hit batter to take a 3-1 lead.

USD would then score three in the fifth, and four in the sixth, while Gonzaga scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the eighth to set up the exciting finish.

Offensively for the Toreros, Kris Bryant led the way, as he went 1-for-4 with one double and three RBI.

Trevor Bayless (2-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 1.0 innings of work. Max MacNabb picked up his third save of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.0 innings of work. Arturo Reyes (2-1) was saddled wit the loss on the mound for Gonzaga, as he allowed three unearned runs on two hits in 3.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Monday, as they host UNLV in a 6 p.m. game at Fowler Park.
