Toreros Deal Gaels a 3-1 Loss

MORAGA, Calif. - Four different Toreros recorded double-digit kills paced by 14 from both Alaysia Brown and Canace Finley, to lead the University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Saint Mary's College Wednesday evening in a West Coast Conference match at McKeon Pavilion.

With the 25-23, 25-20, 25-27, 25-17 win, the Toreros improve to 11-7 overall and move to 4-2 in the WCC. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 4-11 overall and remain winless in the WCC at 0-5.

Finley recorded her career-high 14 kills on 35 swings to hit for a .229 clip, while Brown recorded her 14 kills on 38 swings to hit for a .237 clip. Jayden Kennedy recorded a career-high 12 kills, while also recording five blocks, and the final Torero in double digit kills was Sandra Lozic, who had 10, to go along with 11 digs, to post a double-double. Kristen Gengenbacher had a career-high 29 assists, while Jianna Bonomi recorded another double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs. Hunter Jennings recorded 19 digs to pace the USD defense. As a team, USD hit for a .256 clip.

In the first set, San Diego grabbed the early momentum and raced out to a 12-6 lead, which forced the Gaels into a timeout. USD would eventually build up an eight-point lead at 18-10 on a SMC attack error, but the Gaels then used a 7-3 run to get back to within four at 21-17, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. SMC would then manage to pull back to within one at 23-22, but USD was too strong to overcome, as a Kennedy kill, followed by a SMC kill and a Lisa Kramer kill gave USD the 25-23 win.

In the second set, it was the Gaels who grabbed the early momentum, as they raced out to a 4-1 lead. The Toreros then continue to trail the Gaels throughout the first half of the frame. Then with USD trailing 16-10, a Brown kill sparked a 9-2 Torero run to give USD its first lead of the frame at 19-18. After SMC grabbed the next point, USD put together a 4-1 run to force the home team into a timeout with USD leading 23-20. Back-to-back Kennedy kills then gave USD the 25-20 win.

In the third set, the Gaels managed to keep things close with USD throughout the entire frame. USD could not build up a lead any bigger than two. Then with the score knotted at 16-all, the Gaels used a 4-1 run to take a 20-17 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. San Diego then went on a 6-1 run to take a 23-21 lead, forcing the Gaels into their final timeout. SMC then grabbed the next two points to force USD into a timeout. The two teams then traded points over the next few possessions, before the Gaels managed to squeak out a 27-25 win.

In the fourth and final set, it was once again a close battle right out of the gates. Then with the score knotted at 10-all, a SMC attack error sparked a 7-3 Torero run to give USD a 17-13 lead, forcing the Gaels into a timeout. USD never looked back, as they then cruised their way to a 25-17 win to claim the match, three sets to one.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they remain in he Bay Area and head over to Stockton to take on the Pacific Tigers in a 7 p.m. match. This match will air live on TheW.tv.
