PALO ALTO, Calif. - The USD men's and women's cross-country team wrapped up their regular season Friday at the NCAA West Regionals, held at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. Freshman Sam Mattice paced the women's team once again, finishing the 6k in 22:06, good for 95th place. The women's team had three runners finish in the top 150 and earned 25th place overall (out of 34 teams). The men's team was led by Spencer Hoffman, who ran the 10k in 32:36.
"Our team goal was to climb from our position last year, and we did that. We were 28th, but finished 25th this year," Head Coach Will Guarino said after the race. "We wanted to beat those teams that we had beaten throughout the season, which we did. We beat Pepperdine, Santa Clara, and Saint Mary's. We also beat San Diego State."
Finishing behind Mattice was another freshman, Julie Giannini, who ran the 6k in 22:32. Not far behind her was Ashton Padberg, who clocked in at 22:41. Next up was Andrea Hughes (22:58), Allison Lynch (23:06), Sydney Olagaray (23:46), and Ashley Mitchell (23:50).
On the men's side, Max Pedrotti was the second Torero to sinigh, coming in at 33:05. Behind him was Conor Brandt (33:37), Matthew Beasley (34:45), and Ryan Lesansee (34:44).
"The men went to gain racing experience at this level. Our top guy finished seventh for us at the WCC Championships and first for us today, that was Spencer Hoffman," Guarino said. "I would like to see more consistency with the men. With experience comes confidence and then consistency; this was the first 10km of the season for the men."
This was the final race for the Toreros and they will soon start training for the spring season.
