Nov. 25, 2014 Box Score MALIBU, Calif. - Alaysia Brown and Canace Finley combined for 29 kills to help lead the University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Pepperdine University in the regular-season finale at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 19-11 overall, move to 12-6 in the WCC and closed out the season on a three-match winning streak. USD will now await Sunday's NCAA selection show on ESPNU, to learn if they have earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. With the loss, the Waves finish up the season with an overall record of 12-18, and 7-11 in the WCC.
Brown recorded her match-high 15 kills on 40 swings, and only committed three errors to hit for a .300 clip. Finely recorded 14 kills on 23 swings, while committing no errors to hit for a season-high .609 clip. Kristen Gengenbacher (20 assists) and Jianna Bonomi (16 assists) helped lead USD to a team attack percentage of .272. Hunter Jennings recorded 16 digs in the win to help lead the defense.
The Waves and Toreros exchanged the lead 10 times in the opening frame. Knotted up 20-20, a 4-0 run earned the visiting squad a timely lead and USD was able to close out the stanza 25-21.
The teams continued to battle back-and-forth in set two, exchanging the lead on seven occasions while playing under a tied score 15 times. Another four unanswered points for the Toreros in the closing plays gave USD the lead at the right time, and the Waves would head into the intermission behind 0-2.
San Diego claimed the early advantage in the third, but Pepperdine was able to rally back within one, 19-20. Finely then terminated three kills in the next four points to provide all the separation her team would need and USD closed it out 25-20.
