Feb. 21, 2014

Box Score

PJ Conlon tied a career-high with nine strikeouts.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (3-1) racked up 18 hits en route to a 19-3 non-conference victory in the series opener over Northern Kentucky University (1-4) Friday evening at Fowler Park.

San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they put up six runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Louie Lechich began the hit parade with a solo home run to right centerfield, giving USD its first run of the game. Connor Joe kept things going with a single through the left side, and he moved to second on an Andrew Daniel single to centerfield. After Troy Conyers drew a walk to load the bases, Josh Goossen-Brown drove in Joe with an RBI single. Austin Bailey then drew a bases-loaded walk, and Jesse Jenner drove in the next run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Kyle Holder then capped the scoring for the inning with a bases-clearing triple to right field to give USD a 6-0 lead.

After USD scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an 8-0 lead, the Norse took back three runs in the top of the third inning. The NKU runs came on run-scoring doubles by Zac Asman and Logan Spurlin to move the score to 8-3.

USD then went on to score three runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, and added on two more in the eighth to put the game at its final of 19-3.

Offensively for the Toreros, Lechich led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Joe also had a great day at the plate, as he went 3-for-5 with a double, while Holder went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a triple.

PJ Conlon (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros in dominating fashion, as he allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits, while tying a career-high with nine strikeouts. Conlon was complete lights out on the mound, as he retired 11 consecutive batters between the third and seventh innings. NKU's starting pitcher Cody Cooper (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Norse, as he allowed 11 runs, one unearned, on 11 hits in 2.2 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they resume this four-game series with a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Fowler Park.
