Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a dominating pitching performance from sophomore left-hander Troy Conyers, the University of San Diego baseball team cruised to an 8-0 win over Baylor University Sunday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-1 overall, and run their winning streak to six. With the loss, Baylor falls to 5-5 overall and have now lost three consecutive games. This was also the first time Baylor has been shutout since the March 12, 2012, a 4-0 loss to Michigan State.

Troy Conyers (1-0) was lights out on the mound for the Toreros. The sophomore southpaw took a no-hitter bid into the sixth inning, as he held the normally potent Baylor bats at bay. Conyers then surrendered a single in the sixth, but did not allow another hit for the remainder of this outing, as he racked up eight strikeouts, in picking up the first win of the season. Conyers managed to retired 10 of his final 11 batters he faced.

San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they put up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Hunter Mercado-Hood got things started with a single to centerfield. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Ben Wylly and Ryan Kirby gave USD a 2-0 lead.

The Toreros then doubled their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Austin Bailey led off the inning with a single, and he moved to second on a Wylly single. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, then James Bonds drove in Bailey with an RBI groundout to the shortstop. Kirby then singled up the middle to drive in Wylly, giving USD a 4-0 lead.

USD would go on to score four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game at its final of 8-0.

Offensively for the Toreros, Kirby led the way at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Wylly also had a great day, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

Baylor's Austin Stone (1-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Bears, as he allowed four runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Monday, as they conclude play in the USD Tournament with as 3 p.m. game against California.
