SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a stunning 8-5 decision to Santa Clara University Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 25-12 overall, and fall to 11-5 in the WCC. With the win, the Broncos improve to 16-22 overall and move to 6-7 in the WCC, while also snapping a 15-game losing streak to the Toreros.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across three runs on five hits in the top of the second inning. The SCU runs came on TJ Braf 3-run homer to left field, giving the visitors the early momentum at 3-0.
San Diego then answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, as they scored a pair of runs on four hits. Three singles to lead off the frame by Austin Bailey, Jesse Jenner and Kyle Holder loaded the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Ben Wylly hit a 2-run single through the right side to move the Toreros to within one run at 3-2.
USD then evened the score up in the bottom of the third inning on a Josh Goossen-Brown RBI single, which scored Daniel, who had doubled, to move the score to 4-4.
The Broncos then went on to score two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, while USD scored one run in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game at its final of 8-5.
Offensively for the Toreros, Daniel, Holder and Wylly led the way as all three players went 2-for-4. Connor Joe kept his hitting streak alive, as he moved it to 20 games, while Bailey moved his hitting streak to 17 games and Jenner moved his hitting streak to 11 games.
PJ Conlon (5-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. SCU's DJ Zapata (3-5) was credited with the win, as he allowed four runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they resume this WCC series with the Broncos. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
