USD-SCU Game Two Box
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD softball team (25-21, 9-5) won a pair of extra-inning games at Santa Clara Saturday afternoon. The Toreros won game one 3-2 in the eighth inning after taking the lead on a Bronco error. USD followed up with a 5-4 win after
Chloe Kaneko hit a RBI single in the 11th inning. Kaneko finished the day going 6-10 with 3 RBI.
In game one, the Toreros took a 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and third inning. Dana Prelsnik led off the game with a single down the right field line. Two batters later, she came around to score on a Chloe Kaneko double to left field. Prelsnik scored again in the third on a Kaneko RBI; this time Prelsnik doubled and Kaneko singled her home.
The Broncos cut their deficit in half when Stephanie Fisher hit a fourth inning solo home run. They were able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when Fisher scored on a Kelly Scribner double to left centerfield.
With the game tied at two apiece, the Toreros led off the eighth inning with a Charly Swanberg walk. After Morgan Kurtz pinch ran for Swanberg, she was advanced to second on a Prelsnik bunt. Prelsnik would eventually come around to score the go-ahead run on an error by the Broncos' second baseman.
Cassidy Coleman (13-10) picked up the win after allowing just four hits and two runs in eight innings, while striking out eight. Santa Clara's Ciara Gonzales (5-17) took the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) and five hits.
In game two, the Toreros rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie it at four runs apiece in the sixth inning. USD got a run in the first inning again, this time scoring an unearned run on a Caitlin Rooney fielder's choice. The Broncos tied it up in the bottom of the first when Stephanie Fisher hit her second solo home run of the day. The Broncos took advantage of some Toreros defensive miscues in the third inning to score three runs on only one hit after USD committed three errors.
The Toreros rallied to tie it up in the sixth when they scored three runs, all coming with two outs. After a pair of singles by seniors Kylie Ordos and Charly Swanberg, another senior, Dana Prelsnik knocked them home with a triple to right field. Prelsnik came in to score when Tatum Schultz hit a RBI single to centerfield.
The Toreros had 16 hits, but left 11 runners on base. They finally broke through in the 11th inning after Swanberg got things going with a leadoff double to rightfield. Chloe Kaneko came through with the clutch hit, knocking Swanberg home with a two out RBI single up the middle.
Jenny Lahitte (10-10) pitched all 11 innings, allowing just one earned run, while striking out ten batters. Lahitte lowered her ERA in WCC play to 1.14. Ciara Gonzales picked up her second loss of the day after giving up the winning run in the 11th inning.
The Toreros wrap up their 2014 season Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. when they face Santa Clara in game three.
