Alaysia Brown and
Alexa Banker recorded 12 kills apiece to help pace the 19th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Eastern Washington University Friday morning in the USD Invitational at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-17, 25-18, 31-29 win, the Toreros improve to 7-4 overall, while the Eagles fall to 4-7 overall.
Brown recorded her 12 kills on 26 swings, while also recording five digs, and she hit for a .385 clip. Banker recorded her career-high 12 kills on 22 swings to hit for a .500 clip, and she recorded a career-high in digs with 10 to post her first career double-double. Jianna Bonomi recorded 28 assists in helping steer the USD offense to a .304 attack percentage.
In the first set, the Toreros jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, which forced the Eagles into a timeout. Out of that break, EWU went on a 6-1 run to pull even with USD at 6-all. The two teams then began to trade point-for-point over the next several possessions, until the score was knotted at 9-all. Then a Canace Finley kill sparked a 5-1 USD run to give the Toreros a 14-10 lead, forcing Eastern Washington into its final timeout. USD never looked back, as they cruised their way to a 25-17 win.
In the second set, the Eagles grabbed the early momentum an and raced out to a 7-3 lead. The Eagles then maintained a 3-4 point lead over the next few possessions, until a Finley kill sparked a 6-1 Torero run to pull USD even with the Eagles at 14-all, forcing the visitors into a timeout. Out of the break, USD would go on a 5-0 run to once again force the Eagles into a timeout. USD then cruised its way to a 25-18 win to go up 2-0 in the match.
In the third and final frame, USD raced out to a 9-3 lead to grab all the early momentum. The Eagles then slowly chipped away at the lead and pulled back to within two at 20-18, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. Out of the break, the Eagles would go on a 5-2 run to take a 23-22 lead, forcing the Toreros into their final timeout. USD then grabbed the next two points on an Banker kill and a EWU attack error, which gave USD match-point at 24-23. Eastern then battled back and went on to take set-point five times, until back-to-back EWU attack errors gave USD the 31-29 win.
The Toreros will return to action later this evening with a 7:30 p.m. match against Cal State Northridge at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
