SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD Baseball team (1-5) fell to Dallas Baptist (6-0) 9-4 Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park. After USD took an early 2-0 lead, the Patriots rallied to go up 4-2. The Toreros came back to tie it up at 4-4, but Dallas Baptist scored four unanswered runs to take game two of the series.
The Toreros jumped on the Patriots in the first inning. After leadoff hitter Kyle Holder drew a walk, he was sacrificed to second by Bryson Brigman. Two batters later, Aidan Stinnet hit a RBI single to right field to bring Holder home from second, giving USD an early 1-0 lead.
USD tacked on one more in the second inning when freshman Riley Adams hit his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to right field.
The Patriots cut into the USD lead in the top of the third when Tagg Duce brought home Camden Duzenack from third with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
USD starter Gary Cornish ran in to some more trouble in the next inning, allowing eight Patriots to come to the plate. After allowing a leadoff single, Cornish struck out the next two batters, before allowing two more singles which brought home one run. Cornish then hit Justin Wall with a pitch to load the bases. David Martinelli made Cornish pay with a two-RBI single to right field, bringing the score to 4-2.
The Toreros immediately responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie it up at 4-4. After an Aiden Stinnett leadoff single, Austin Bailey knocked him in with a triple down the right field line. The next batter, John Grimsley, then laid down a beautiful bunt as Rich Hill called for the suicide squeeze. Bailey came in to score to knot it at 4-4.
Jacob Hill, who took over for Cornish in the fifth inning, had a tough luck sixth allowing three earned runs. The Patriots added to their total in the seventh with a Camden Duzenack solo home run to left, and tacked on one more in the ninth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly, giving the Patriots a 9-4 lead.
Jacob Hill (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) in three innings. The Patriots' Trevor Conn (1-0) picked up the win after pitching five innings of shutout ball.
