SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior left-hander PJ Conlon deals from the mound, and the 30th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team's bats exploded, as the Toreros picked up a 10-1 win over Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Schott Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 13-7 overall, move to 5-0 in the WCC, run their winning streak to eight, have now won 10 of their last 11 games, and also claim their second consecutive WCC series. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 8-12 overall and 1-4 in the WCC.
Conlon (3-1) was almost unhittable this afternoon, as he picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros. Conlon allowed one run on three hits in 8.0 innings of work. After SCU scored in the second inning, Conlon completely shutdown the Bronco offense, as he retired the next eight batters he faced, before hitting TC Floritine in the bottom of the fifth inning. Conlon then resumed mowing down the SCU line-up as he went on to retire 14 of his final 15 batters.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Bryson Brigman led off the frame with a single through the right side. Kyle Holder then reached on a fielder's choice, and Brigman was thrown out at second. Holder then stole second, and after Jerod Smith drew a walk, Colton Waltner drove in Holder with an RBI single through the left side. Riley Adams then drew a walk to load the bases, and a Andrew Soloman 2-run single to right field scored the final two runs of the frame to give USD a 3-0 lead.
SCU then took back a run in the bottom of the second inning on a Kyle Cortopassi run-scoring double to left field, which scored Ryan Budnick, who had doubled, to move the sore to 3-1.
USD then took off and never looked back offensively, as they scored one run in the third, two in the fifth, and four in the seventh to put the game at its final of 10-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Brigman led the way as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Waltner went 2-for-4 with one double, one RBI, and three runs scored.
