SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 29th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team cruised its way to a 13-4 win over Brigham Young University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 16-9 overall, move to 8-1 in the WCC and have completed the sweep over the Cougars. With the loss, BYU falls to 11-16 overall and 4-5 in the WCC.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they managed to push across one run in the bottom of the first inning on two hits. With two outs, Kyle Holder got things going with a single through the right side. Colton Waltner then doubled in Holder to give USD a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then exploded in the bottom of the second inning, as they scored five runs on four hits. Jesse Jenner led off the frame being hit by a pitch. Jerod Smith then singled through the right side, which moved Jenner to third. After Riley Adams drew a walk to load the bases, Hunter Mercado-Hood would hit an RBI single to right field to score Jenner. Austin Bailey did the rest, as he hit a three-run triple to right centerfield to give USD a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Cougars then began to chip away at the lead, as they scored one run in the third on a Brennon Lund run-scoring double, and two more in the top of the fourth on doubles by Eric Urry and Cole Wilstead to move the score to 6-3.
San Diego then answered right back in the bottom of the fourth by scoring three runs on two hits. The USD runs came with two outs on a Holder 2-run triple to right centerfield to give USD back the momentum and a 9-3 lead.
USD would then go on to score four more in the bottom of the fifth, while BYU scored one in the sixth to put the game at its final of 13-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI. Waltner also had a great day, as he went 3-for-5 with four RBI, while six other Toreros recorded multiple hits on the afternoon.
CJ Burdick (2-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on three hits in 3.1 innings of work. Brandon Kinser (2-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Cougars, as he allowed nine runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work.
San Diego will return to action on Tuesday, as they head up Interstate 5 to take on UC Irvine in a 6:30 p.m. non-conference game at Anteater Ballpark.
