IRVINE, Calif. - The 25th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 13-4 decision to UC Irvine Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Anteater Ballpark.
The Anteaters (15-10) got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the bottom of the second inning. The UCI run came on a Cole Krueter RBI single, which scored Mitchell Holland, who had singled, to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
San Diego (16-10) then evened the score up in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Colton Waltner launched his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, which moved the score to 1--1.
UCI then went on to score four runs in the bottom half of the third, and two runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to take a 9-1 lead.
USD then took back three runs in the top of the eighth inning on three hits. The USD runs came on an Austin Bailey solo home run, a Jesse Jenner RBI single, and a Ryan Kirby RBI sacrifice fly to pull the Toreros back to within five at 9-4.
However, the Anteaters would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth, as they scored four more runs to cap their scoring for the day, and put the game at its final of 13-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Waltner led the way as he went 3-for-3 with a home run and one RBI. Bryson Brigman was the only other Torero with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-3 with a double.
CJ Burdick (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings of work. UCI`s Alonzo Garcia (2-0) was credited with the win, as he allowed one run on three hits in 3.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they resume West Coast Conference play with a 6 p.m. game against Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash.
