SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team scored six unanswered runs to claim a 6-1 win over Long Beach State University Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 22-13 overall, and have now won four consecutive games. With the loss, the Dirtbags fall to 19-13 overall.
The Dirtbags got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the second inning, they took advantage of a USD miscue to score one run on two hits. With one out, Alex Bishop popped the ball up deep down the left field line, and two USD players bumped into each other in foul territory, only the ball fell just fair inside the line for a triple. A Nolan Meadows RBI single then scored the run to give LBSU a 1-0 lead.
San Diego answered in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs on two hits. Ben Wylly got things started with a walk, and Bryson Brigman then unleashed his second home run of the season, a 2-run shot to left field. Colton Waltner kept things rolling when he reached on an error by the LBSU third baseman. Waltner then stole second, and a Jesse Jenner double to left field scored Waltner to give USD a 3-1 lead.
USD then padded its lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Riley Adams got things started when he was hit by a pitch. Wylly then tripled to right centerfield to score Adams for the first run. Brigman then hit an RBI single up the middle to score Wylly, moving the score to 5-1.
USD then went on to score one run in the sixth to put the game at its final of 6-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Brigman led the way as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Drew Jacobs (2-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on four hits in 5.0 innings of work, while striking out five. LBSU's Darren McCaughan (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Dirtbags, as he allowed three runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they host second place San Francisco in a 6 p.m. crucial West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
