SPOKANE, Wash. - The 25th-raked University of San Diego baseball team cruised its way to a 9-4 win over Gonzaga University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 17-10 overall, move to 9-1 in the WCC and have now won four of their last five games. With the loss, the Zags fall to 13-16 overall, and they move to 3-7 in the WCC.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across four runs in the top of the first inning. Bryson Brigman led off the game with a double down the left field line, and a Kyle Holder RBI single to centerfield scored Brigman for the first run of the game. Colton Waltner kept things going as he singled to right field, and Jesse Jenner drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Austin Bailey then reached on a fielder's choice, which moved everyone up one base, and saw Holder thrown out at the plate. Back-to-back RBI singles by Jerod Smith and Riley Adams then scored the next two Torero runs, and chased the GU starting pitcher from the game. The final run then came on a wild pitch, to give USD a 4-0 lead.
USD tacked on two more runs in the top of the second inning. The Torero runs came on a throwing error by the Zags third baseman, a Jesse Jenner RBI sacrifice fly, and a Bailey RBI single up the middle, to give USD a 7-0 lead.
GU then took back a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on a Tyler Frost 2-run homer, to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard, trailing 7-2.
USD then scored two more runs in the sixth, and Gonzaga scored a pair in the eighth to put the game at its final of 9-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Holder led the way, as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while both Brigman and Adams each went 2-for-5 with Adams driving in one run.
David Hill (6-2) was brilliant on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits in 8.0 innings of work, while striking out 10. GU's Calvin Lebrun (2-4) was saddled with the loss for the Zags, as he allowed four runs on five hits in 0.1 innings of work.
The Toreros and Zags will resume this three-game series on Friday evening with a 6 p.m. game at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
