SPOKANE, Wash. - The 25th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Gonzaga University Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 17-11 overall, and move to 9-2 in the WCC. With the win, the Zags improve to 14-15 overall, move to 4-7 in the WCC, and have now evened the series with the Toreros.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across one run on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. The GU run came on a Sam Brown run-scoring double to left field, which scored Tyler Frost, who had singled, to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
After the Zags tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh inning, USD put on their rally caps in the ninth and tried to put on another comeback. With one out, Bryson Brigman got things started with a single through the left side. Kyle Holder then drove in Brigman with a run-scoring double to right center field, to cut the score in half. But USD could get no closer, leaving the game at its final of 2-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Holder led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one double. Jerod Smith is the only other USD player to record multiple hits, as he went 2-for-3.
PJ Conlon (4-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work, while also striking out eight. GU's Brandon Bailey (5-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, as he allowed one run on eight hits in 8.2 innings of work. David Bigelow picked up the save for the Zags, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 0.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they look to take the series in a rubber game against Gonzaga at 12 p.m. inside of Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
