RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team scored four unanswered runs to claim a 5-1 win over UC Riverside Wednesday evening the Toreros' regular-season finale at the Riverside Sports Complex.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 32-20 overall and have now won three consecutive games to close out the regular-season. With the loss, the Highlanders fall to 13-36 overall and have now lost 10 consecutive games.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to score one run in the top of the first inning. Kyle Holder led off the frame with a single, and he moved to second on a Bryson Brigman groundout. Austin Bailey then drew a walk, and Jesse Jenner singled in Holder to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders then evened the score in the bottom of the second inning on a Joe Chavez solo home run to centerfield, to move the score to 1-1.
San Diego then regained the lead in the top of the third inning. The USD runs came on Hunter Mercado-Hood RBI double, and a Ben Wylly 2-run homer to give USD a 4-1 lead.
USD then added in another run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch to put the game at its final of 5-1
Offensively for the Toreros, Jenner led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Daniel Reitzler (3-1) was credited with the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 3.0 innings of work. UCR's Jesus Gonzalez (1-5) was saddled with the loss for the Highlanders, as he allowed four runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will now take the remainder of the week off to focus on final exams. USD will return to action on May 21, as they open play in the West Coast Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed up at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. USD's opponent will be determined after this weekend's WCC games conclude.
