STOCKTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team was stunned by Loyola Marymount University with a 21-3 loss in the opening game of the West Coast Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 32-21 overall and will now play in an elimination game on Friday at noon, against BYU. With the win, the Lions improve to 32-20-1 overall and advance on to the winner's bracket and will play Pepperdine on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
The Lions were able to jump out to an early lead, as they managed to score six runs in the top of the first inning. The LMU runs came on a David Edwards grand slam, and RBI singles by Cassidy Brown and Austin Miller, to give the Lions the early 6-0 lead.
LMU then went on to score one in the second, three in the fifth, six in the sixth, one in the eighth to take a commanding 17-0 lead.
San Diego then spoiled the shutout for the Lions in the bottom of the eighth inning, as they scored two runs on two hits. Austin Bailey got things started with a double off the left field wall. After Colton Waltner walked, Ben Wylly hit a RBI single to left center, scoring Bailey, and moving Waltner to third. Riley Adams then hit a groundball to the third baseman, who committed a fielding error, to allow Waltner to score the second run, moving the score to 17-2.
LMU then score five in the top of the eighth, while USD scored one in the ninth to put the game at its final of 21-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored.
David Hill (9-4) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings of work. LMU's Colin Welmon (6-6) picked up the win for the Lions, as he allowed no runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work, while striking out six.
