SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's swim team had their first competitive action of the season Friday afternoon when they competed in a long course pentathlon against San Diego State at the Aztec Aquaplex. The meet was the first of the season for both squads and gave each team their first chance to get a lot of swimming in in a semi-competitive environment. While the meet was more of a structured scrimmage, SDSU wound up on top by a score of 33-24.
The first five events of the day - 100 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 200 IM (all in meters)- were combined to make up the pentathlon, with points being allotted accordingly. The meet concluded with a set of sprints and various races so the coaches could gauge their talent.
Three freshmen had the best pentathlon performance for the Toreros. MK Clancy came in ninth with a total time of 7:22.31, behind her was Mackenna Briggs (12th; 7:29.14) and Danielle Taylor (13th; 7:34.63).
The Taylor sisters kicked off the event with strong performances in the 100 free. Jackie, who has the USD school record in the 100 yard free, came in second with a time of 59.86. Her younger sister Danielle came in fifth with a time of 1:00.49.
In the next event, the 100 fly, MK Clancy (3rd; 1:06.92) was the top Torero finisher, with Danielle Taylor was right behind her (4th; 1:07.00).
In the 100 back, Sarah Reierson paced USD with a fourth place finish, coming in at 1:10.16. Briggs (9th; 1:12.57) and Clancy (10th; 1:12.88) also earned top-ten finishes.
In the fourth event of the pentathlon, Julia Personeni tied for fifth with a time of 1:21.29. Wrapping up the pentathlon, Clancy had the fastest time on the team in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:35.18.
In the sprints, the Toreros took three of the top four spots in the 50 fly: Danielle Taylor (1st; 29.70), Mackenna Briggs (2nd; 30.00), and MK Clancy (4th; 30.20). In the 50 back Reierson (32.90) took second, Danielle Taylor finished in fourth (33.90), and Briggs finished fifth (34.30).
Danielle Deiparine secured first place in the 50 breast with a time of 37.80. Reierson (3rd; 38.60) and Briggs (4th; 38.90) also earned top-five finishes.
Stephanie Jones tied for first in the 50 free at 27.20. The Taylor sisters came in fourth and fifth with times of 27.70 (Danielle) and 27.9 (Jackie).
The Toreros return to action October 16 when they host Oregon State and Vanderbilt at 2:00 p.m. They host the UCLA Bruins the following day at noon.
